PDF vs DOCX: Which File Type Should You Use?

Always follow the job posting first. If the employer asks for a PDF, send a PDF. If it asks for Word, send DOCX. When the posting does not specify, DOCX is usually the safest parser-friendly option because most ATS platforms can extract its structure reliably.

A PDF can also work well if it is text-based. The risk comes from scanned PDFs, Canva-style exports, or files where text is flattened into an image. If you cannot select and copy the text from your PDF, an ATS may struggle with it too.
