A Fellowship Title Is Not a Relationship Type
Do not decide the section from the prestige of the program or the word Fellow. Start with what actually happened. Some fellowships fund study without assigning work. Some place a participant inside an organization with deadlines, stakeholders, and deliverables. Others are research, clinical, policy, teaching, public-service, creative, or leadership appointments. A short cohort may offer workshops and mentoring but no job-like duties.
This distinction also explains why a fellowship application document and a post-fellowship employment resume may look different. Columbia Undergraduate Research and Fellowships notes that fellowship applications may call for a fuller record closer to a CV. When you later apply for a job, select the fellowship evidence that answers that employer's decision.
| What the fellowship was | Evidence worth showing | Likely home |
|---|---|---|
| Substantial professional placement | Assigned work, artifacts, stakeholders, decisions, service, and outcomes | Experience |
| Research appointment | Question, methods, contribution, outputs, collaborators, and findings | Research Experience or Experience |
| Selective award or funding | Issuer, award name, purpose, status, and date | Awards and Honors or Education |
| Training, cohort, or leadership program | Selection, curriculum, applied project, and completed deliverables | Professional Development, Projects, or a compact Additional section |
Do not call a fellowship employment merely because it paid a stipend. Do not reduce real job-like work to an award line merely because the program used a prestigious name.
Draw the Sponsor–Host–Work Triangle
Fellowships often involve more than one organization. The sponsor may fund or select the fellow, while a host team supervises the work. A university may administer the award while a lab, agency, nonprofit, or company receives the deliverable. Record those relationships privately before choosing the visible employer line.
Private fellowship record
Program: Civic Technology Fellowship · Sponsor: North River Foundation · Host: Meridian Public Interest Lab · Functional role: Service Design Fellow · Status: completed · Dates: June–August 2026 · Work: intake research, prototype documentation, and a staff handoff · Sources: acceptance letter, scope, calendar, repository, presentation, and supervisor contact.
Keep the official program name, but make the functional work understandable. If the arrangement resembled an academic appointment, compare the record with the graduate-assistantship classification guide before choosing Experience, Research Experience, or Education.
Put the Fellowship Timeline in One of Four States
| Status | Safe resume wording | Do not imply |
|---|---|---|
| Awarded and accepted, not started | Incoming Policy Fellow · Starts September 2026 | Completed projects, skills, or dates that have not happened |
| Active | Community Health Fellow · May 2026–Present | Final outcomes that are still in progress |
| Completed | Research Fellow · January–July 2026 | Employment, authorship, or ownership beyond the record |
| Awarded but declined | Program Fellowship — Awarded, declined · 2026 | Participation, fellow status, or program work |
A future line can be useful when the acceptance is formal and the start date affects the application story. Keep it short and clearly future-facing. A declined fellowship belongs, if anywhere, as recognition rather than experience.
Spend Resume Space by Evidence, Not Prestige
Choose the section by the hiring question the fellowship can answer. Research-heavy work may deserve its own entry when methods and outputs are relevant; the research-experience method separates the question, contribution, and result. A funding-only fellowship may sit beside other recognition using the award placement test. Early-career candidates can place substantial fellowship work above unrelated jobs when it supplies the strongest target evidence; the no-experience examples hub shows how education, projects, service, and experience can share one first page.
The work changes the hiring decision
Use title, host, dates, and two to four evidence-led bullets when the work is recent, substantial, and relevant.
The selection matters more than the work
Keep issuer, fellowship name, purpose, status, and year; omit generic program description.
One applied deliverable carries the value
Name the project and contribution, then note the fellowship as context.
It repeats stronger evidence
Remove a short or irrelevant program when it costs space without clarifying fit.
Write the Work as a Deliverable Chain
Replace a generic line such as “Selected for a prestigious fellowship” with a chain the reviewer can inspect: problem, action, artifact, audience, and nearest honest result. Selection may explain how you entered the program; it does not substitute for evidence of what you did.
| Weak line | Evidence-led rewrite |
|---|---|
| Participated in a competitive technology fellowship. | Mapped 28 intake interviews into five service barriers and delivered a prioritized prototype brief used by the host team's fall planning workshop. |
| Worked with community partners. | Facilitated weekly reviews with three partner groups, documented open decisions, and prepared an accessible handoff guide for staff owners. |
| Learned research and leadership skills. | Designed a coded interview log, summarized recurring findings, and presented tradeoffs to program and operations leads. |
Use only counts, decisions, and outcomes you can trace to a source. Shared work should keep shared credit visible. If the deliverable is confidential, describe the method, audience, and safe scope without naming protected data or claiming sole ownership.

North River Civic Technology Fellowship · June–August 2026
- Mapped 28 resident and staff interviews into five service barriers, giving the host team a shared evidence base for prototype selection.
- Built and tested a plain-language intake prototype with two program teams; documented unresolved risks and accessibility changes for the product owner.
- Prepared a six-page implementation handoff covering decision owners, research limits, open questions, and the next validation round.
This entry names the functional title, host, program, dates, work products, collaborators, and bounded results. If the sponsor is more recognizable than the host, keep both without making the sponsor look like the employer.
Handle Awarded, Declined, Unpaid, and Upcoming Cases
Status words are evidence. They prevent a selective program from turning into an inaccurate work claim. Princeton's current graduate CV guidance says a selected fellowship or award that was turned down may be listed with a declined note; the university's CV guide is a useful boundary for academic recognition. On an employment resume, keep the line only when the selection is relevant enough to earn space.
| Case | Recommended treatment | Risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Unpaid but substantial work | List the real role and work; compensation usually does not need a resume label | Calling training or observation employment when no work relationship existed |
| Accepted future placement | Use Incoming, accepted status, and the future month | Past-tense bullets or projected outcomes |
| Awarded and declined | Use a compact award line with Awarded, declined | Using Fellow as a role title |
| Short cohort with one project | Lead with the applied project and name the fellowship as context | Expanding workshops into job duties |
Match the Fellowship Record to One Job Description
Read the posting for required work products, audiences, methods, systems, and decisions. Then map only supported fellowship evidence to those requirements. A policy role may value briefing notes and stakeholder synthesis; a data role may value the dataset, method, validation, and decision; a program role may value operating cadence, handoffs, and service improvements.
Compare the fellowship evidence with the target job
Use the job-description matcher to see which requirements your fellowship record supports and which still need evidence elsewhere in the resume.

- Confirm the official fellowship name, sponsor, host, functional title, status, and dates.
- Separate selection evidence from work evidence and completed work from future plans.
- Check every artifact, number, outcome, and ownership phrase against a source.
- Use one consistent relationship across the resume, application, LinkedIn, and screening forms.
- Keep private award letters, funding details, protected research, client data, and personal records out of the public resume unless legitimately required.
- Open the exported file in plain text and on a phone-sized screen; confirm the title, host, dates, and bullets remain in reading order.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a fellowship count as work experience on a resume?
A fellowship can count as work experience when it involved substantial research, service, training, project, clinical, policy, or operating responsibilities. Classify the real relationship and work instead of assuming every fellowship is employment.
Where should a fellowship go on a resume?
Use Experience for substantial job-like work, Research Experience for research-led appointments, Education for a short academic line, or Awards and Honors when the fellowship was primarily a selective award. Choose the section that makes the relevant evidence easiest to understand.
Can you list an upcoming fellowship on a resume?
Yes, when you have formally accepted it and label the status and future dates clearly, such as Incoming Fellow, September 2026. Do not describe planned work as completed experience or list a tentative opportunity as accepted.
Can you list a fellowship you were awarded but declined?
A selective award may be listed in Awards or Honors with an accurate note such as Awarded, declined. Do not list yourself as a fellow, use participation dates, or claim program work you did not perform.
